Russia is represented by a person who is sanctioned by US

The current incumbent announced on Tuesday that Russia will be represented on the board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington by a sanctioned central banker.

Xenia Yudaeva is a former First Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Russia and an adviser to its Governor, Elvira Nabiullina.

"Yes, I confirm. From 1 November, Xenia will be Russia's Managing Director at the IMF", said Alexei Mozin.

A. Mozin has held this position since 1996 and is the longest-serving Fund's Executive Board member.

Sanctions were implemented due to the position at the bank

K. Yudaeva was sanctioned on 20 April 2022, two months after the start of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, with Washington's first round of sanctions.

According to the State Department, she was added to the US sanctions list because of her positions at the Russian Central Bank and the commercial bank Otkritie.

In theory, US sanctions prevent such individuals from entering US territory, although the IMF is based in Washington's federal capital.

They also freeze all assets held directly or indirectly in the US by the individuals concerned and prohibit any US company or citizen from entering into commercial or financial transactions with them.
