Ursula von der Leyen vists Ukriane

European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen will meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kiev on Friday. The meeting will focus, among other things, on winter energy aid.

Earlier, the President of the European Commission pledged a further €160 million of Community support to Ukraine, which was attacked by Russia.

The funds will be used to repair damaged energy infrastructure and develop renewable energy, mobile heating equipment, and accommodation.

Since the start of the Russian war, the Kremlin has "targeted Ukraine's energy sector to try to plunge the country into darkness," said Ms von der Leyen. "As friends and partners of Ukraine, we must do everything we can to keep the lights on. In two weeks' time, the heating season will begin. "As temperatures drop, the European Union is ready to step up its support to Ukraine," noted the Head of the Commission.

According to the International Energy Agency, Ukraine's energy infrastructure is under severe pressure due to Russian attacks on power plants and electricity transmission networks.

Power cuts and water supply problems are a regular occurrence. The situation could worsen further in winter.
