35 people injured in train collision in Prague

A collision between two trains in the Czech capital, Prague, on Wednesday morning injured 35 people, rescue workers and railway companies said.

According to police, one of the drivers tested positive for alcohol, but the railway operator said the other driver was probably to blame.

"One of the trains jolted forward during a red light and hit the back of a stationary train," said a spokesman for the railway infrastructure company Sprava Zeleznic.

35 patients sustained minor injuries

The Prague emergency service reported that 35 patients were treated for minor and moderate injuries, but none of them were in danger of death. Some passengers suffered "bruises and scratches" but others suffered broken bones, "including a fractured jaw", an emergency service spokeswoman said.

Police said the breathalyzer showed that one of the drivers was drunk, and he was taken for a blood test. The Czech national railway company admitted that the driver had tested positive but said he was probably not the cause of the accident. However, the railway operator added that it would fire the driver if the blood test confirmed that he was drunk.

The other train is operated by the Czech railway company KZC, according to the Czech news agency CTK.

Train accidents are common in the Czech Republic, a member of the European Union with a population of 10.9 million. In June, a high-speed train collided with a freight train in Pardubice, east of Prague, killing four people and injuring more than 20.
