Shogun wins Best Drama Award

The world-famous awards took place in Los Angeles on the evening of 16 September.

  • FX's Japanese epic "Shogun" had a very successful night, winning 18 Emmy Awards, including Drama Series, Lead Actor and Lead Actress.
  • HBO's "Hacks" won the Best Comedy Series award, beating "The Bear".
  • Baby Reindeer won the Best Mini-Series award, with creator Richard Gadd winning for his brilliant writing and acting.

The 2024 Primetime Emmy Awards have come and gone, but Hacks shone the brightest - winning against Bear, which broke its own record by winning with 11 awards[1].

In the drama category, FX's Shogun, a historical Japanese epic based on the novel by James Clavell, made a big splash, bringing home 18 Emmy Awards, including Drama Series. It had already broken the record for the most Emmy Awards won in a single year at last week's Creative Arts Emmy Awards, so Sunday's awards added to it.

Also having a spectacular night was the limited series The Little Deer, a dark British Netflix drama about Donny Dunn, a bartender and budding comedian who is pursued by an eccentric woman he meets in the pub where he works. The series won the main award in this category, and creator R. Gadd was awarded for his screenplay and acting. The acting award also went to Jessica Gunning, who plays Martha, the woman who haunts his character. "The Little Deer is said to be based on Gadd's autobiographical play of the same name[2].

The awards have been handed out 76 times

The Emmy Awards have been given out 76 times in total.

Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai won acting awards for Shogun. Liza Colón-Zayas, meanwhile, won Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy for The Bear. She was the first latina to win this award. Overall, Sanada described Shogun as "a dream project for East and West".

"This film taught me that when people work together, miracles can happen. Together we can create a better future", he said.

Sawai, for her part, was overwhelmed with emotion as she accepted the Best Actress award.

"I cried before my name was announced," she said as she held the golden Emmy statuette[3].

Shogun's achievements are said to have helped FX owner Walt Disney win 60 Emmy awards this year, the most in the company's history.

It is pointed out that Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach won their second consecutive Emmy for Best Comedy Actor and Best Supporting Actor. In the show, White portrays a chef trying to turn his family's sandwich shop in Chicago into a great place to eat, while Moss-Bachrach won the trophy as Cousin Richie, the restaurant manager and father. Both actors won awards at the last Emmy ceremony, which was held in January when the Hollywood labor strikes disrupted the normal schedule.

Liza Colón-Zayas was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy for her role as Tina Marrero, a cook, in the show "Bear".

"All the Latinos who are looking at me, keep believing and keep voting. Vote for your rights", said Colón-Zayas in one of the few references of the evening to the upcoming US elections.

Host Candice Bergen also recalled how her fictional "Murphy Brown" character, a single woman, was assaulted in 1992 by then Vice President Dan Quayle because she was pregnant.

"Oh, how far we've come. Today, a Republican Party vice-presidential candidate would never attack a woman for having children," she said.

The winners were chosen by 22,000 performers, directors, producers and other members of the Television Academy

The winners were chosen by nearly 22,000 performers, directors, producers, and other members of the Hollywood Television Academy[4].

R. Gadd, star and creator of the TV series "Baby Reindeer", said:

"Ten years ago I was wronged. I never thought I could get my life back together. Here I am, just over a decade later, picking up one of television's biggest awards," he said.

Schitt's Creek stars Eugene and his son Dan Levy shared their thoughts at a red-carpet event in downtown Los Angeles.

Dan Levy joked that the Emmy Awards, broadcast live on Disney's ABC, were known as "the biggest night on television to honour movie stars with a streaming service".

Emmy statuettes cost around USD 400

Many people are curious about how much money the winner of the Emmy Awards receives.

The truth is that the Emmy Awards celebrate excellence in acting, making it one of the most prestigious awards an actor can win. Established in 1949, the prestigious awards honor outstanding achievements in various categories. Some of the well-known categories include drama series, comedy series, and various individual types.

A barometer of excellence, the ceremony has evolved over the years to reflect the changing landscape of television, recognizing innovative content that captivates audiences worldwide.

However, an actor does not receive any prize money for winning an Emmy; winners receive an Emmy statuette, which is a symbol of recognition for outstanding contributions to the television industry. In addition, the award is considered a prestigious achievement in the entertainment community that can lead to greater opportunities and careers.
In terms of value, the statuettes cost around USD 400 and approximately USD 47 200 is spent per evening for 118 categories.
