The president is sure that there were some issues with the elections, so the results are tainted
After the ruling party's victory in the parliamentary elections is officially confirmed, Salome Zurabishvili, the President of the Republic of Sakartvelo, challenges the results of the vote before the Constitutional Court.
"The President has filed an appeal to the Constitutional Court to annul the results of the parliamentary elections held on 26 October," her lawyer, Eka Bezelia, said on Tuesday.
The reason for the move is "widespread violations of the electoral law and the secrecy of elections".
With all votes counted, the Electoral Commission officially confirmed the victory of the ruling Dream of Sakartveland party on Saturday. "The ruling party was declared the winner by the Electoral Commission immediately after the elections.
Official appeal filed
After the final results were announced, S. Zurabishvili spoke of systematic fraud according to "Russian methodology." The pro-European President rejected the prosecutor's invitation to elaborate on the accusations.
Pro-European opposition parties had earlier accused the ruling camp of "stealing" the election victory. They announced that they would not attend the first sitting of the new Parliament next Monday. Zurabishvili also announced that he would not sign the decree convening the Parliament and demanded new elections.
The Head of Government, Irakli Kobachadze, announced he would find another way. However, according to experts, the new Parliament cannot meet until a decision is taken on Zurabishvili's appeal to the Court.
