2 children among 12 killed in Lebanon

Twelve people, including two children, have been killed in a series of explosions in Lebanon, the country's health minister said on Wednesday, updating the death toll a day after the blasts blamed on Israel.

Hundreds of wireless devices exploded simultaneously across Lebanon on Tuesday. Israel has not yet commented on the unprecedented attacks.

Lebanese Health Minister Firas Abiad said on Wednesday that 12 people had been killed and between 2 750 and 2 800 injured. Earlier, nine people were reported dead, but "after checking all hospitals", the number of casualties had increased, the minister told a press conference. Among the dead, he said, were a girl and a boy, as well as four health workers at private hospitals in Beirut's southern suburbs who were carrying pagers.

2 800 people flooded the hospitals in half an hour

F. Abiad said that "the attack was very big", with some 2 800 injured people in Lebanese hospitals in half an hour.

The devices exploded in key strongholds of the Iranian-backed paramilitary group Hezbollah in southern Beirut and eastern and southern Lebanon. In Beirut and its southern suburbs alone, some 1,850 people were injured.

300 people in critical condition

"Just under 300 patients are in critical condition", some with facial injuries and bleeding in the brain, Mr Abiad said, adding that not all those who arrived at the emergency room were young men, but there were also children and elderly people.
