A shark killed a tourist

A shark off the Canary Islands attacks a German tourist and does not survive. According to the coastguard, the 30-year-old lost a leg and died of a heart attack in the rescue helicopter. According to reports, the incident occurred while the German woman was sailing on a British catamaran. Shark attacks are sporadic in this region.

A coastguard spokesman told AFP that the accident occurred when the German tourist was sailing on the Dalliance Chichester, a 17-meter British catamaran 500 km southwest of Gran Canaria. According to Spanish media, a shark attacked the woman when she jumped into the water.

Shark attacks are very rare in the region

The Canary Islands are a group of islands in the Atlantic off the northwest coast of Africa. Such attacks are not common in the area.

According to the University of Florida's International Shark Attack File database, the number of "unprovoked" shark attacks worldwide is expected to increase by 2023. Last year, 69 people were attacked by sharks for no apparent reason, up from 63 in 2022.

More than half of the shark attacks last year were recorded off the coast of the US. A total of ten attacks last year resulted in death: four in Australia, two in the US, and one each in the Bahamas, Egypt, Mexico and the French overseas territory of New Caledonia.
