Devastating storm results in people missing
Severe storms hit northern Italy after a blistering heatwave, flooding streets and uprooting trees. One person was reported missing.
Local media reported that the northern regions of Lombardy and Piedmont were worst affected. A man working on a tractor near Turin was washed ashore when the River Orco erupted. The search for him continues.
Rivers have also flooded in Milan, the capital of Lombardy, and evacuations have had to occur in some areas near the city's Lambro Park.
Storm affected broadcasts
Due to the storm, the local radio station Radio Populare temporarily suspended its broadcasts in the city for the first time since its founding in 1976.
During the night, water flooded the atrium and some corridors of the Milan Palace of Justice, with delays of up to two hours for incoming trains.
Flooding was also reported in Liguria, on Italy's north-western Mediterranean coast. The storms caused severe damage to the agricultural sector near Savona. Heavy rain and flooding also hit Bari in southern Italy on Thursday.
