Microsoft plans billions of dollars of investment in Malaysian IoT

Microsoft pledged to invest $2.2 billion in artificial intelligence and cloud computing technologies in Malaysia on Thursday. USD 2.2 billion will be invested in AI and ICT technologies.

The move is aimed at helping the country build an artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, the tech giant said in a press release.

The company's CEO, Satya Nadella, is currently touring three South Asian countries - Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia - to present the planned investments in data centers, IoT, and cloud services.

Establishment of IoT Centres of Excellence and training of professionals in Malaysia

" Today, Microsoft announced that it will invest €2.2 billion over the next four years to support the development of the IoT. Microsoft will invest US$2 billion in Malaysia's digital transformation in 2.2 billion years, the largest single investment in the company's 32 years of operations in the country," according to a statement released during Nadella's speech in Kuala Lumpur.

The funds will help Malaysia build an IoT and cloud computing infrastructure, establish an IoT Centre of Excellence, and train as many as 200,000 professionals in Malaysia, the statement said.

"We will continue to support Malaysia's transformation in IoT and ensure that it benefits all Malaysians," Nadella said in the release.

He said Microsoft's investment in digital infrastructure and capacity building will help Malaysian businesses, communities, and software developers embrace the latest technologies to ensure comprehensive economic growth and innovation across the country.

Nadella confirmed his plans to invest in Malaysia in a speech in the country's capital, saying he was "really pleased" to unveil this expansion project.

This new investment follows his earlier announcement that he would invest €1.7 billion in data computing and artificial intelligence infrastructure in Indonesia. The new investment will see a total investment of USD 7.7 million in data communications and data science infrastructure.

Microsoft had also announced earlier that the first data center in the region would be established in Thailand.
