Man hid 100 snakes in his trouser pockets

A man has been arrested in China for trying to smuggle more than 100 live snakes into the mainland by stuffing them into his trousers, according to the country's customs authorities.

Chinese customs said on Tuesday that the unnamed traveler was stopped by officials as he tried to sneak out of semi-autonomous Hong Kong to the border city of Shenzhen.

"After inspection, customs officers found that the passenger's trouser pockets were full of canvas bags tied with string and taped with adhesive tape," the customs said.
"Upon opening them, live snakes of various shapes, sizes and colours were found in each bag," the report continues.

According to the report, officials seized 104 reptiles, including milk snakes and corn snakes. Many of the snake species found were non-native.

The video posted shows two border guards closely inspecting transparent plastic bags full of red, pink and white snakes.

However, the authorities have cracked down on these activities in recent years.

The country's biosecurity and disease control laws prohibit people from bringing in non-native species without permission.

"Those who break these rules... will be prosecuted in accordance with the law," Customs said, without explaining what punishment awaited the man who was detained.
