Letter, long believed to be lost, sold in an auction
A handwritten letter by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791), written in 1783, sells for €440,000 at an online auction. A private individual bought it from Europe, International Autograph Auctions Europa, an auction house based in Malaga, Spain, said on Friday.
The original bid for the manuscript was €100,000. According to the auction house, the Austrian composer's letter was the subject of intense interest from interested parties in the US and Asia.
The auction house said W. Mozart's letter in German to the German-born French publisher Jean-Georges Sieber was, in fact, presumed lost. However, it was eventually found in the family archives.
In the letter, the composer gives an insight into his thoughts and, according to scholars, the first hints of his famous string quartet for Haydn. He also offers to buy music for Sieber.
