EU court revokes the 1,5 billion fine

An EU court on Wednesday overturned a €1.49 billion fine Brussels imposed on Google for abusing a dominant position in online advertising.

The judges ruled on Wednesday that the European Commission had not provided sufficient evidence that Google had abused its dominant position in search advertising with its AdSense for Search product.

"The General Court annuls the decision of the (European) Commission in its entirety," the ruling says, adding that "the institution erred in its assessment".

The continuous fight over fines and rules

The legal dispute arose from a complaint lodged with the German Federal Competition Authority in 2010, which triggered an investigation by the European Commission.

In 2019, the Brussels-based competition watchdog concluded that Google had infringed EU competition law and imposed a €1.49 billion fine.

"Google has appealed to the EU's General Court to overturn the fine. The decision can still be appealed to the EU's highest court, the EU Court of Justice.
