A plane carrying deported criminals from Germany landed in Afghanistan

For the first time since the Taliban returned to power, a deportation plane took off from Germany's Leipzig-Halle airport for Afghanistan on Friday morning, the region's interior ministry said.

A Qatar Airways charter plane carrying 28 Afghan criminals from various countries departed Leipzig, the largest city in the state of Saxony, for Kabul at 6.56 am.

The German Federal Ministry of the Interior organized the operation.

Germany does not maintain diplomatic relations with Taliban commanders in Kabul

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced that the deportation of the most dangerous criminals and terror suspects to Afghanistan and Syria would be reopened following the deadly knife attack in Mannheim at the end of May.

This decision also applies to persons suspected by the security authorities of committing the most severe politically motivated crimes, including terrorist attacks.

The debate has been reignited following last week's deadly knife attack in the western town of Solingen, which left three people dead, and the main suspect is a 26-year-old Syrian man who is believed to have evaded deportation.
