Trump prioritizes the ceasefire in Ukraine

Donald Trump has said that resolving the crisis in Ukraine will be his top priority when he resumes the presidency next month, saying the situation in the Middle East is "less complicated".

"I think we have to resolve the Ukraine problem with Russia", the US President-elect told the French magazine Paris Match. His interview was recorded on Saturday and appeared on Wednesday.

"Both of these countries are suffering incredible losses. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers are being killed," Trump said in response to a question about where he intends to focus his international attention.

Meetings and talks might push things forward

"Of course, the Middle East is also an important priority area. But I think the situation in the Middle East is less complicated than in Ukraine with Russia", Trump said.

"But we have to resolve these two situations, and we have to do it quickly. A lot of people are dying."

D. Trump was in Paris on Saturday to attend the inauguration of the Cathedral of Our Lady, which has been rebuilt after a fire in 2019. While in France, he met President Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky. This was Trump's first trip abroad since winning the November elections.

"We had a very successful meeting with President Zelensky," said Mr Trump.

On Tuesday, Mr Zelensky said he thanked Mr Trump for his "unwavering determination" to end the war in Ukraine.

On Sunday, he wrote on his social networking platform Truth Social that "a ceasefire should be declared and negotiations should begin immediately".

He also reiterated his call for Washington to stay out of the situation in Syria, where last weekend a lightning offensive by rebels toppled the regime of long-time President Bashar al-Assad.

"Syria will have to fend for itself," Mr Trump said in an interview. - We are not interfering in Syria's affairs."
