Hackers stole billions of crypto

German broadcaster DW reported on Thursday, citing Microsoft's 2024 Cybersecurity Report, that North Korean hackers have stolen around USD 3 billion worth of cryptocurrencies since 2017.

The stolen money was used to fund the DPRK's nuclear program, the report published on Tuesday said.

Microsoft notes that the money funded more than half of the DPRK's nuclear weapons development costs. Between $600 million and $1 billion was stolen in 2023 alone.

Experts revealed multiple groups of malicious actors

The report also says that since last year, the company has uncovered several new North Korean groups. According to analysts, the increase in their number may indicate that Kim Jong Un's regime is expanding its involvement in hacking activities related to extortion.

According to the Microsoft report, in addition to North Korea, groups from Russia, China, and Iran are also active in the hacking ranks.
