Brazil feuds with X: requires E. Musk to pay

On Thursday, a Brazilian court fined tech billionaire Elon Musk's companies after a number of users in the country briefly logged on to social media platform X.

The platform was blocked in Brazil on the orders of Judge Alexandre de Moraes, who accused the platform of not taking sufficient action against the spread of hate speech and fake news.

On Wednesday, some users managed to connect to X, leading the Federal High Court to fine X and satellite internet provider Starlink, both owned by Musk, 5 million reais (US$920,000) for each day the platform violates the ban.

The Brazilian Association of Internet and Telecommunications Service Providers (ABRINT) said the automatic updating of phone apps allowed X to circumvent the ban.

The update moved X's servers to Cloudflare, allowing it to change IP addresses and thus avoid constantly blocking access.

Earlier this month, Mr de Moraes demanded that X block the accounts of right-wing activists who spread conspiracy theories and false information. Musk called the demand illegal and the social media giant has not complied.

In mid-August, Musk ordered the closure of X's office in Brazil because he feared that the company's representative there would be arrested. According to media reports, X has around 20 million users in Brazil.
