More than 100 rescuers were working in the mountains near the Italian city of Bergamo on Monday

A major rescue operation is underway in Italy to save a female caver who has fallen into a cave and is trapped more than 500 metres underground.

The 32-year-old woman suffered multiple fractures after falling into the Abisso Bueno Fontaine cave system deep underground. She had been trapped in the same cave in July 2023, when she was rescued after two days.

The speleologist is part of a project that has been running for several years in this giant cave on the northern shore of Lake Iseo. One of its objectives is to draw accurate maps of the cave system.

Rescuers are confident that the operation will be successful

Rescue services reported that a woman was exploring an unexplored part of the cave on Saturday. She slipped and fell down a narrow tunnel. Her companions raised the alarm.

Rescuers said they were confident that the victim would be brought safely to the surface where a medical team was waiting. She asked her life partner to tell her that she is OK.

The scene of the accident is approximately four hours' walk from the cave opening. Rescuers have to use explosives to widen the extremely narrow passageways to accommodate the stretcher.
