Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, a strong supporter of Donald Trump, on Wednesday became the first European Union (EU) leader to comment on the US election, announcing on social media that he was "approaching a beautiful victory".

"Good morning, Hungary! On the way to a beautiful victory," Orban wrote on Facebook early on Wednesday, captioning his post with a Hungarian and US flag emoji.

He did not mention Trump directly, but his post appeared after announcing the former president's predicted victory in two important states, North Carolina and Georgia[1]

Even before the elections, former President Trump of the United States received good wishes from his friend the Hungarian Prime Minister when he phoned his counterpart across the Atlantic.

"I have just spoken on the phone with President Trump. I wished him the best of luck next Tuesday," Orban said last week.

In addition, after an earlier debate in the European Parliament (EP) on Hungary's presidency of the EU, Orban told a press conference that if Trump won, he would personally uncork "several bottles of champagne".

The Hungarian Prime Minister has a warm relationship with his "good friend" Trump, the former Republican President, having visited him twice this year, and has repeatedly expressed his hope that he will return to the US presidency. The two leaders started to communicate more closely in 2016 and their friendship deepened when the politicians met at the White House in 2019.

We would like to remind you that on 5 November. On November 5, the US held its presidential election, where Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump faced off. The latter has already secured victory by reaching the 270 electoral college votes needed to win the election.
