Woman found dead after being swallowed by python in Indonesia

A woman swallowed by a python has been found dead in the belly of a snake in central Indonesia, police said on Wednesday. This is the second case in a month in the province where a python has killed a person.

Siriati, 36, disappeared after leaving home on Tuesday morning to buy medicine for her sick child, police said, prompting a search by relatives who missed her.

Her husband, Adiansa, 30, found her slippers and trousers on the ground about 500 meters from their home in the village of Siteba, South Sulawesi province.

"Soon after, he spotted a snake, about 10 metres from the path. The snake was still alive," Idul, a local police chief who, like many Indonesians, has only a first name, told the AFP news agency.

Iyang, a village elder, told AFP that Adiansa became suspicious after spotting the python's "very large" belly. He called in villagers to help cut open the strangler and they found the woman's body inside.

Such incidents are considered extremely rare, but pythons have devoured several people in recent years

Last month, a woman was found dead in the belly of a volleyball python in another area of South Sulawesi. Last year, an eight-metre-long python was killed by provincial residents after it was found strangling and eating a farmer in a village.

In 2018, a 54-year-old woman was found dead inside a seven-metre-long python in the town of Muna in south-east Sulawesi. A year earlier, a missing farmer in West Sulawesi was found in a palm oil plantation, swallowed by a four-meter python.
